Mark Jewell joined the PSE Associates team in September 2018 and currently works within the EI Group (formerly Enterprise Inns) and Star Pubs & Bars teams.
Mark graduated from the University of Essex with a degree in mathematics and, having done a few jobs, including conveyancing, he felt he wanted to get involved with the ‘practical side’ of property.
“My role includes assisting the team with estimates and working on ‘spend to let projects’ for Star,” Mark explains. “I really enjoy getting out onto site and learning about key aspects of a quantity surveyor’s role, such as managing costs.”
He has recently worked on some pub refurbishments – including The Railway in Yatton, near Bristol.
“It’s really satisfying to witness a project come together and see a pub given a new lease of life – as this can make a real difference to the local community,” says Mark. “Visiting site makes the whole process more meaningful and interesting.” While Mark’s degree in maths has been a very useful step in the world of quantity surveying, he’s now working towards a masters qualification in quantity surveying to supplement the practical knowledge he’s gaining in his role.
“It’s a distance learning course and I’ve completed two modules,” he explains. “The first was on construction methods, which was a steep learning curve, and the other was on contract administration – which will be really useful in my role.” Mark lives just down the road in Worthing and says he loves working in Brighton as it’s such a ‘lively place with lots of culture’. When not at work, Mark enjoys running and playing hockey; he is a member of Worthing Hockey Club. Mark recently joined two PSE Associates colleagues – Justin Buckwell and Joel Cohen – in running the Brighton Half Marathon, which he finished in a very good 1 hour 45 minutes. He’s completed the Brighton Marathon a couple of times as well over recent years.
Mark adds that he’s really enjoying his role at PSE Associates.
“I like the balance of work which working across the two pub teams gives me,” he says. “I also really appreciate the huge amount of knowledge and experience there is here for me to draw on.”
