In common with many of the team at PSE Associates, Jim Bratton has been with the firm for several years. He’s a Senior Quantity Surveyor and joined 11 years ago.
“When I was at school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do career-wise,” Jim explains. “But, I knew somebody who worked at PSE Associates and was invited in to meet Paul Edwards and he offered me the chance to follow a career in quantity surveying.”Once he had joined, Jim then also embarked on a part-time degree in Quantity Surveying at London South Bank University, which he completed five years later.
Over the years, Jim has worked across different teams at PSE Associates but currently heads up part of the pub team – supporting clients which include Star Pubs & Bars, Goals Soccer Centres and Ei Group (formerly Enterprise Inns).
“I’m lucky to have worked with quite a few of our clients and learnt something from each one,” says Jim. “I particularly enjoy the early stages of a project – taking briefs and talking to the client about the project and what they are hoping to achieve. That said, I also like being out on site.”
Jim says that what sets PSE Associates apart from other QS companies is its focus on the hospitality industry.
“This means that we are involved with a fast-paced environment and are often required to work to tight deadlines, particularly with pubs. With traditional QS firms, there is often a bit more time,” he explains.
Jim adds: “PSE Associates is a fantastic company to work for. There’s a real trust between us all; it’s a culture which starts with Paul Edwards and Colin Rhodes and is fed through the whole team. Every single person here does the right thing for their client because they care about delivering projects on time and on budget.”
Jim lives in Eastbourne with his wife and their two young children. In addition to enjoying family life, he is involved with martial arts and Thai boxing, and teaches at a local club. The next few months will see him building up his running, as he’s secured a place in the 2019 London Marathon. Jim will be raising money for Myaware – a charity dedicated to the care and support of people affected by myasthenia (muscle weakness)
