“I really enjoy working on the Premier Inn extensions,” says Tom. “While you’d think that the projects would be similar, they are actually all very different with varying complexities and each with its own set of challenges. The projects not only involve the addition of rooms, but also include restaurant extensions, refurbishments, additional car parking and reconfigured reception areas.”
He continues: “In all cases, it is a live environment and we are on the site of a working hotel – which is a crucial factor to consider. The team must ensure the project runs smoothly not just for Premier Inn but also for the restaurant and of course their guests; we can’t just switch off the power to a project when we feel like it.”
Tom says he really enjoys being out on site and that seeing projects evolve from conceptual plans through a full project cycle to reality is fulfilling.
“I’m out on the road a fair bit – probably three or four days a week – and tend to pick up the projects in the West Country and Wales,” he explains. “Most recently, we’ve just completed a site in St Austell, Cornwall, and we’re working on several others including Swansea and Paignton at the moment. There is a huge sense of responsibility but there’s also a great deal of job satisfaction in this role.”
Tom also enjoys the ongoing relationship with the Whitbread team:
Tom joined PSE Associates from a local firm of architects, where he was working as a surveyor, while also studying for his Masters in ‘Project Management for Construction’.
“My degree was in Mathematics,” says Tom. “I liked working things out and problem solving… so surveying seemed like a good thing to do. The architects firm I worked for focused on sustainable housing projects and I discovered that I enjoyed construction. Moving to a larger firm like PSE Associates was the natural choice in allowing me to build up my experience and focus my career path.”
In addition to really enjoying his role, Tom says that PSE Associates is a great place to work.
“Many company owners will tell you that the ‘door is always open’ but here at PSE Associates, it really is. If there’s ever anything that needs to be discussed, it’s easy to do that. It’s a really friendly environment to work in with a great atmosphere; colleagues here are friends,” he says.
When he’s not in the office Tom, who lives in Lancing, keeps himself busy. He’s recently got married and he and his wife are expecting their first baby in the autumn. On top of that, they’ve recently acquired a new puppy, Norman – who is a popular visitor to the PSE Associates office.
Tom is also a keen hockey player and has played for Lewes Hockey Club 1st XI for the past 15 years, where he is currently club captain.
